Q. What is Tea?
A. Tea comes from an
evergreen plant and its leaves. The plant is called Camelia Sinensis.
Both Green and Black tea comes from this plant.
Q. What is the difference
between Green and Black tea?
A. Black tea is fermented and
Green tea is not. The difference is in the method of preparation. Green tea is
prepared with water that is between 170° F to 180° F where as Black tea
is prepared with water that is between 200° F and 212° F.
Q. Which tea has more caffeine, the Black tea or the Green tea?
A. The Black tea has more caffeine. Since the Black tea is prepared at higher temperatures, more of
the caffeine leaches into the tea resulting in higher caffeine readings. If the Green tea were prepared at the same high temperature, the caffeine readings
would be pretty much the same.
Q. Which has more caffeine,
coffee or tea?
A. A 6oz cup of regular
coffee contains about 100mg of caffeine whereas a 6oz cup of tea contains
34 mg of caffeine. It should be pointed out that pound per pound they contain
the same amount of caffeine, but a pound of coffee makes 60 servings where a
pound of tea makes 180 servings. So, cup for cup, the tea has about 1/3 of the
amount of caffeine as a cup of coffee.
Q. Is tea good for your
health?
A. Research has shown us that
black and green teas are rich in polyphenols which are antioxidants.
Antioxidants are known cancer inhibitors and studies have shown that people who
consume 4-5 cups of tea per day have up to 50% lower probability of contracting
certain types of cancer, such as breast and colon cancer. Also, studies have
shown that people having consumed 3 or more cups of tea per day have a lower
incidence of heart disease.
